Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Resigns from the High Court of Kolkata

A noteworthy development is that Kolkata High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay has tendered his resignation, raising the possibility of a political career.

According to Justice Gangopadhyay, he has been aggressively battling "serious corruption" in the education system for the last two years, focusing on problems involving political meddling.

Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who was supposed to retire at the end of this year, announced that he would tender his resignation to the President of India on Tuesday, March 4, in the early hours of the morning. Notifications would be sent to the Chief Justice of the Kolkata High Court and the Chief Justice of India upon his resignation.

Speaking before the media, Justice Gangopadhyay outlined his concentrated efforts over the last two years to battle widespread corruption in the education sector. He made it clear that those who were prepared to defend the dignity of those in need of protection could only find a platform in politics.

"I am going to step down from my role as Justice of the Kolkata High Court. I've been working on important problems for the past two or more years, particularly in the field of education, and I've found a lot of corruption. Judge Gangopadhyay said, "Many prominent figures in the education sector are currently behind bars, and cases are ongoing."

There are "major recruitment scams" going on in West Bengal, he said, especially with relation to the future fund gratuity. "In this regard, I have issued directives. But I haven't dealt with situations involving labour and labour rules," he continued.

Judge Gangopadhyay declared, "I should now address the wider public." He was concerned about a great deal of defenceless people and emphasised the importance of helping them.

Recognising his quick instructions, he sometimes demanded obedience in a few of hours. He praised applicants from all social groups who were interested in school jobs, particularly in an industry plagued by anomalies in hiring procedures and supported by the government of West Bengal.

He issued multiple orders for the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into anomalies in the hiring of non-teaching and teaching staff for sponsored and aided institutions in West Bengal. Though it has received appreciation from a variety of sources, some remarks made in some situations have irritated state leaders of the ruling party.

The investigation by the CBI into the purported irregularities in providing caste certificates to candidates seeking reserved MBBS seats in West Bengal was the subject of a disagreement between the Single Bench and Division Bench of the High Court. In January, the Supreme Court intervened and transferred all related petitions to itself.
